iLive Portable Music System/Boom Box with Docking Station and Recharger for iPod (Black) Review

iLive Portable Music System/Boom Box with Docking Station and Recharger for iPodWhen I received the item, I unpacked it & installed the batteries. I connected my daughter's iPod and the sound quality was good. There could have been more volume, but it was ok. There wasn't any bass or treble adjustments on this. I liked how the iPod songs could be forwarded & skipped via the buttons on the dock itself. I carefully repacked it & wrapped it for a Christmas gift. When my daughter opened it, she liked it. But when she tried to listen to the radio, it was all static. The next day, the radio portion would work, and then quit again. So, I ended up returning it to the store where I bought it. This was a very bacic, no-frills type of unit, but in fairness, the price was very low as well. If the unit worked as designed, we would have kept it.

Sony CFDS01 CD Radio Cassette Recorder - Silver Review

Sony CFDS01 CD Radio Cassette Recorder - SilverI am a teenager who insists on records for home use, cassettes for portability. That being said, upon finding this boombox and using it for a day, and it looks promising.I bought it at Target to replace a Sony CFD-E75 from the late 1990s (admittedly a more upscale boombox) and this one holds its own.I have never had trouble with a Sony.Responding to another reviewer, the STEREO/MONO function does have a purpose; stereo FM reception is more sensitive than mono, so when a station is distorted, setting it to MONO can completely eliminate the fuzz, or at least improve it significantly.Trust me, this button IS useful.I took off a star mainly because of a few minor details, but it does a good job.The bass is a little lacking, but it is by no means intolerable.Just be sure the MegaBass is on.Perhaps hooking it up to PC speakers or a stereo amplifier would make it sound a little fuller.A good use would be on a desk, a medium-sized room, or in the kitchen/garage.The CD player works fine, as does the cassette player and radio. One area to note is that the cassette does NOT automatically stop when fast-forwarding or rewinding, although it does play to a stop.Unlike the CFD-E75, it does not automatically switch functions (for example, you must press to listen to a CD, whereas some will automatically switch to the CD player whenis pressed) and does not have a remote, although you lazy people know you really don't need one.The cassette records wonderfully. It gives a good clear sound, and my full-size tape deck shows that its recording levels are set at a good maximum level for best quality. It also comes with a replaceable cord, so if you either damage it or lose it, just get a new one at RadioShack.A good boombox for a good price.

COBY CX-CD241 Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio Review

COBY CX-CD241 Portable CD Player with AM/FM RadioPro:
1. Tiny
2. Tiny
3. Cute
4. Decent radio reception even with very short antenna

Con:
1. Puny sound (but it's a tiny, inexpensive stereo...)
2. IT HUMS. In radio or CD mode, there is a moderate/low pitched hummming sound that comes through the music. Even when you're not playing a CD, there's the hum. I thought it was just me, since I'm very sensitive to hums, but my wife (who doesn't care) noticed it, too, without my pointing it out.

I MAY keep this boombox because it's cheap and cute, but the hum really does irritate me.

Emerson PD5098 Portable Radio CD Player Review

Emerson PD5098 Portable Radio CD PlayerI bought this CD player for it's size.We use it on our kitchen, where it fits nicely on a shelf.

Aside from being a space saver, there isn't much to say about this unit.It plays CDs fine and hasn't had any trouble playing discs I've burned using iTunes.Being able to see the disc spinning is kind of cool.

There are only two things I don't really like about this player: the AM/FM radio tuner and the volume control. The radio tuner is not digital, so you have to manually tune in a station every time you want to listen to the radio. It does seem to get pretty good reception though. The volume doesn't go up very high.Don't get me wrong, it's loud enough, it's just not loud enough for me to hear well from the other room.Of course, some might see this as a positive thing.

Overall, I would recommend this CD player if all you need are bare bones CD player functions.

Sony ZS-H10CP Heavy-Duty CD Radio Boombox Review

Sony ZS-H10CP Heavy-Duty CD Radio BoomboxA quick caveat before I review. As of 5/12/2006 the Sony site (and Sears, too) still says this boombox takes 'C' batteries. It doesn't, it takes 'D' size, though a quantity of 6 is correct. I can't see that Amazon has included battery info. one way or the other.

This is truly an Industrial Strength boombox - extremely rugged. I bought one for my handicapped daughter, who needs almost constant music to keep her happy, but has been pretty rough on past boomboxes. This one ought to last.

It is significantly larger than the average portable boombox, so pay attention to the dimensions and weight to see if it's a fit for you.

The only weak spot is the antenna, which my daughter managed to break the first day. Be careful how you restore it to its telescoped slot. We can't find a replacement antenna yet.

Also, it lists on the Sony site and at Sears for $129.99, so I don't know where this site got a list price of $179.99.

Old School Style High Performance Portable Music System with Ipod Slot Review

Old School Style High Performance Portable Music System with Ipod SlotI will share Gizmodo's sentiment about this product 100%.This booooombox doesn't have to sound like a Harmon Kardon system. All it has to do is look good next to cardboard and play N.W.A., Nolan Thomas, Warren G and Kenny Loggins the way they were meant to be heard. That, it does.

It does take 10 "D" cell batteries, and I found that you can find a pack of 10 at Target for about $9 if you hunt around, AND you can prolong the life of the batteries if you make sure to switch the AC/DC switch on the back to AC when you are not using it.Otherwise the clock (any "sleep mode" functions) will suck the battery life down. That or it all transferred to the iPod.I'm not sure - just make sure to flip that switch.

It even comes in a huge box you could cut up and breakdance on.

Sony CFD-S350 CD/Cassette Portable Boombox (Silver) Review

Sony CFD-S350 CD/Cassette Portable BoomboxI had my old Sony Boombox for 11 years & it finally gave out.I saw this one; it looked nice and had all the same basics as my old one.I needed a simple player & this one fit the bill. Many others look too "space age" to me.

When I got it, I put in a CD and it didn't sound like it had much bass.I turned on the Mega Bass & it didn't sound any different. At least with my old Sony you could tell when the Mega Bass was on.Because of the lack of bass I think it's an OK player.

I took my children to a local play gym/arcade, and they had the Sony CFD-F10 there. It sounded great!Sad to say, it makes me wish I did a little more comparing, the extra $10-$15 dollars seems worth it.

Delphi SA10001 XM SKYFi Boombox Review

Delphi SA10001 XM SKYFi BoomboxAs others have noted:

PROS:

Decent sound, long antenna cord (20'), compact design, clean aesthetics.

CONS:

Flimsy volume control, antenna can't be attached without removing the battery compartment cover, and VERY ANNOYING high pitched hum that makes you think you're listening to AM radio.Unless you are willing to put up with this and need the portability, you're better off buying a home adpater and running the receiver through your home audio setup.

iLive Portable Music System / Boom Box with iPod Docking and Recharging (Pink) Review

iLive Portable Music System / Boom Box with iPod Docking and RechargingAt this price point, I do not feel that you can expect superior sound.I do think that this unit has good sound that is average to this price point or slightly better. My daughter loved the color. It is fairly small and will fit great on her night stand. It is also great for travel due to its size (we are used to hauling around a much larger one).

I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again for a child. At this price, even if it breaks in a year, she will have gotten good use out of it.(one of the reasons we don't buy more expensive things for her is that she is a little hard on them).

There is a circular thing that is right behind where the ipod sits and it can be pulled out or pushed in depending on if you have a larger or smaller ipod. This is great compared to other units we have, because my daughter has a nano and it prevents it from being pushed back and potentially bending the connector prongs. It certainly adds to the stability of the ipod.

UPDATE:runs on ac power or batteries.

Audiovox XMBB1 XM Compact Sound System Review

Audiovox XMBB1 XM Compact Sound SystemOrdered this earlier this week, at first I received an XMAS100 boombox. Amazon was quick to overnight me the correct XMBB1 though once I reported the error. This gave me the opportunity to check out both the XMAS100 and the XMBB1.

I have the Delphi XpressRC headunit to be using with this boombox.

The quick and the short is I prefer the XMBB1, here's why. It's antenna has a neat little setup so it can be sleekly mounted on the rear of the unit flush with the surface, or you can extend it the full 21 feet to put it near a window etc. The XMAS100 only has the plug and no sleek interface to store it inside/on the unit, so the XMAS100 in my mind is for more of a permanent setup location. Also the XMBB1 runs off 8 C batteries, or the plug, whereas the XMAS100 only runs off the plug. These two features make the XMBB1 very portable, can take it to the beach, park etc and its all compact with its antenna and running off batteries. The XMAS100 does have a remote, but many of the XM headunits you'll be attaching to this come with their own remotes anyways. The XMAS100 does look more sophisticated with its brushed aluminum finish, but the XMBB1 isn't too bad either. Also the price of the XMBB1 is 33% cheaper than the XMAS100 right now. They both have AUX in for connecting another audio source if you wish. The sound on the XMBB1 is great, as is the XMAS100, can hear the base and its very clear. Hope this helps you decide.

Altec Lansing inMotion MIX iMT800 Portable Digital Boom Box for iPhone and iPod Review

Altec Lansing inMotion MIX iMT800 Portable Digital Boom Box for iPhone and iPodI own the Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker for iPod and iPhone (Black) and I was very surprised at how much better the iMT800 sounds. I will admit that for the price difference you should be able to expect better sound...and you can. The iMT 800 sounds very good - about on the same level as a nice rack stereo system. The high notes are crisp and there is strong continuity all the way down to bass. While the bass is not overly deep (effective to 50-60Hz would be my guess) it is more than adequate - the iMT800 does not sound punchy at all - instead the entire frequency response range is nice and smooth. I was very impressed.

Other Features

- Comes with 5 different adapters to ensure that any model of iPod will work. In my video review I show an iPhone (2nd G), and iPod Touch (2nd G) and an older Video iPod and they all fit nicely onto the iPod Dock.

- As you would expect the iPod dock will charge your iPod.

- One very nice feature is that when the iMT800 is used with an iPhone it will automatically silence the music when you receive a call - in fact, the ring tone is played at full volume over the Boom Box speakers! (Shown in the video)

- Decent remote - it would be a bit nicer with digital display - but it probably isn't worth the extra $$$.

- While it is not rechargeable you can use the iMT800 with D batteries - which makes it perfect for taking to the beach, park, or wherever.

- Plenty of volume to fill large areas

- It comes equipped with a FM radio and the ability to program in four presets (I will admit that 4 presets is a bit meager).

- 2 auxiliary inputs - this means that you can plug anything that has a headphone jack into the iMT 800 - this includes iPod shuffles (as seen in the video), CD players, tape decks, computers, Squeezeboxs... you name it- if it has a headphone jack it can be played on the iMT800. In fact, up to three devices can be hooked in at once (And then you can toggle through the inputs)

- Not too heavy - about 13 pounds so it can moved without too much effort

Areas for improvement

- Not the most attractive looking speaker unit. Not a problem for me - but this may not look at home on a walnut bookcase (or any nicer looking decor). This unit is designed for indoor/outdoor functionality - style was left at the door (or at least partially).

-It would be nice if it was rechargeable - it would add cost, but it may be worth it... however, there is nothing that would prevent you from buying rechargeable batteries!

- The display - could be made larger... and a full color display would have been a nice upgrade.

Final verdict -

I know I listed several areas for improvement, but in truth they are very minor points. The biggest factor is that this is a great sounding speaker dock - and it sounds significantly better than the less expensive Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker for iPod and iPhone (Black) so if great sound is your requirement you can buy with confidence!

5 Stars

Gpx CD Boom Box Review

Gpx CD Boom BoxFirst, I took it out of box and I could sense something was wrong with the power cord. It jiggles where it plugs into machine, which causes machine to turn off. Could not get it right. I held the cord in place while I tried radio which is VERY poor quality: static, stations shift. I switched it to CD player (button felt like it might fall off!), it made a buzzing noise, displayed 1, blinked allot, then stopped itself. It never played. I tried this several times. No go. With the way the power cord was, I felt like I was doing a juggling act! I gave it one star only because I had to. I really give it NO STARS! So I packed it up and it's on its way back to Amazon. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!

Sony CD Boombox with Digital AM/FM Tuner (Pink) Review

Sony CD Boombox with Digital AM/FM TunerGreat CD Player! We bought for my six year old and she loves it. It's very easy to use and light weight.
The handle makes it very easy for portability.
The only negative thing I have to say is the description says it has a digital radio, but it doesn't.
You have to turn a nob to change the channel and the read out for the station is not digital.
We bought it for the CD player part of it and are very happy with it. The radio does tune and work
just fine also by the way. It's a great product for the price!
