Product Description:
Not only can you hear the music; you can feel it with this 2.1 channel mini audio system. With powerful satellite speakers and a subwoofer, music in several formats can be heard with exceptional depth and clarity. Much more than a player and dock for your iPod, this audio system can play MP3 music files on SD / MMC / MS cards, and USB flash memory devices. It also plays CDs and MP3 CDs, features several playback functions, and has a programmable memory for as many as 64 audio tracks. Radio play isn't left out either with digital tuning and programmable memory for 40 stations (10 AM / 30 FM). The only way to get more music options would be to invite the musicians to play live in your living room.

Apple Hi-Fi Home Stereo for iPod (White) Review

Apple Hi-Fi Home Stereo for iPodIt is obvious that Apple made a mistake claiming the Ipod Hi Fi would replace an Audiophile's home system. That claim has opened them up for criticism but, that is the only thing that can be criticized. The Hi Fi system is what it is - and that is a pretty amazing little device.I am not an expert, nor am I a novice in the art of high fidelity.I am, however, a Musician who has held Music and sound quality close to my heart for many, many years.I went to the Apple store with my AAC compressed 4 gig Nano and plugged into the system.Honestly, the sound at the store did not "blow me away"; I was in a busy store with much background noise.Realizing that the environment has much to do with sound quality, I took a chance and purchased it.I had dismissed most of the reviews that I read as sour grapes (for some reason) against Apple from people who do not own the system - had to be, some of the reviews were written before the system was even available!I was right; when I got this home and listened to it I was impressed.I do not listen to music that has that "wall' of sound (i.e. power chords, screaming vocals, retarded drums) I listen to music that has dimension (i.e. Jazz, Funk, Fusion).I wanted an audio device that would allow me to control my Ipod via remote, hold most of my favorite tunes, not fill my living room up with audio equipment, and be loud and clear enough to surround me with un-distorted sound. This system fills that bill.My one complaint is:you need to crank it up a bit for it to "come alive".At loud volumes, I find the tone control set to treble boost works best and at lower volumes set it to bass boost, meaning you need to re-adjust it upon volume changes. One other point, some of the lower end tunes on my Ipod sometimes distort when listening through the ear buds. This system seems to clean that up when cranking through the system. The added bonus being that I can use it in my backyard.
It is expensive? Yes.It is worth it? Yes, but keep in mind, it is what it is.

Product Description:
Fill your home with sound, not stereo components. Keep your music collection at your fingertips, not in countless CD cases. Change the way you experience digital music. iPod Hi-Fi delivers crystal-clear, audiophile-quality sound in a clean, compact design. Hear, hear.
Where did the stereo go?
Just slide your iPod(1) into the built-in Universal Dock to turn on and tune in to digital music as you've never heard it before. From pumping bass to bright treble, iPod Hi-Fi delivers natural, room-filling sound. Close your eyes and you'd think you were listening to a huge stack of speakers. But iPod Hi-Fi measures just 17.0" x 6.6" x 6.9."
Virtuoso performance
As versatile as it is compact, iPod Hi-Fi incorporates thoughtful touches that make playing your music pure pleasure. Use the included Apple Remote to control music playback from anywhere in the room. Charge your iPod through the iPod Hi-Fi dock while you play music. Or take your show on the road courtesy of D-cell battery(2) power. All that makes iPod Hi-Fi pretty extraordinary. Just like iPod.
Rock-solid enclosure
The innovative design of iPod Hi-Fi transforms consumer-grade materials into the ideal enclosure for high-fidelity sound. The high-end sound of iPod Hi-Fi pours out of a double-walled plastic shell redesigned for maximum stiffness to prevent vibration and resonance--two major causes of sonic imperfection. And airtight sealing allows voluminous, unobstructed sound, effectively preventing buzzing and clatter.
The right balance
iPod Hi-Fi features three speaker cones custom designed to provide balanced sound across the frequency range. The result of numerous rigorous acoustic tests, this design delivers room-filling stereo imaging. The two 80 mm wide-range cones are set in dedicated chambers and isolated on the front plate, providing mid and high frequencies that sound vivid and bright. The natural bass of iPod Hi-Fi is generated by a 130 mm woofer. Thanks to the airtight sealing, the low frequencies are enriched inside the enclosure and then directed via tuned tubes through ports in the front.
Energy bar
No need to find a place to hide an unsightly power brick, as iPod Hi-Fi houses all power components internally. Or run iPod Hi-Fi on six D-cell batteries(2). Either way, it plays your music with big, warm sound. In DC mode, custom electronics manage the energy to enhance battery life and sound, even adjusting volume as necessary. And iPod Hi-Fi will charge your iPod from its batteries when the iPod runs low.
Look who's talking
Seamless integration means more than just plopping your iPod into a set of speakers. That's why iPod Hi-Fi actually communicates with your iPod. Just connect your iPod to the built-in Universal Dock and a simple, intuitive Speakers menu(3) lets you personalize iPod Hi-Fi to match your music. Take tone control, for starters. You can choose settings like "Normal," "Treble Boost," or "Bass Boost" to produce tones perfectly suited to your surroundings. You can also choose to display album art in a large, easily viewable format while iPod Hi-Fi plays. Set the backlight to remain on while playing and that album art positively pops off your iPod.
Take charge
iPod Hi-Fi not only plays nice with any iPod(4) using a dock adapter, it charges the iPod, too. Just drop your iPod into the built-in dock and you can play music and charge your iPod all at once. When plugged into an AC outlet, iPod Hi-Fi fully charges the iPod battery. And if you're running iPod Hi-Fi on D-cell batteries(2), it even provides your iPod with a charge so you can still play on the go.

Sony D-NE518CK ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman with Car Kit Review

Sony D-NE518CK ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman with Car KitThis player does what is advertised.I do not enjoy playback of MP3s at 48kbps, but I am satisfied with getting 170 songs at 132kbps at 4 min. avg. song and 700MB CD (their claim) rather than the unbelievable number of 490 per CD.The small print on the back of the package was in blue and very hard to read. Thus, beware a 300 MHz Pentium II is a minimum requirement for the Atrac3Plus compression software. I am not going to list all the other computer requirements, but would encourage you to find those out before buying, if the Atrac3Plus feature is important to you.By the way, that format will only play on the CD players that can read that format, obviously or not so obviously. You are likely going to love this player, if you need one for your car and/or home.It finds mp3 songs fairly fast (faster than my old Rio player) and continues play where you left off unless you hold down the play button. One problem I am having with my model is that the forwarding and rewinding through a track does not work as said in the manual with the mp3s on my CD-RWs, but works fine with my CDs, hmm. One other feature I would love to see to make this player even better is a carrying pouch with beltclip. While it does come with velcro adhesive for play in the car, eventually I usually manage to have the player knocked about accidentally. A carrying case would provide additional protection against damage. Hope this helps.

JVC RCEZ38 Boombox Review

JVC RCEZ38 BoomboxI just received my unit a few days ago, and it is a good value for all of the features. As others have said, the bottom end is weak for a unit its size, but there also a bug in the USB directory system that makes it very difficult to use with USB sticks. The bug is that it doesn't read the directory tree properly, and when you work through the menu to a track, it ends up playing a completely different track.

This is with a 4GB stick formatted FAT32; I don't know how it works with FAT or NTFS. The manual was also underwhelming, and really didn't talk about this in much detail. All of the tracks are available, and play properly, it's just very difficult to locate them.

It also doesn't recognize a 1GB stick that I have that works fine with the computer and the USB car radio that I have, so not all sticks will work with this. I have no idea why that particular stick is a problem.

Update - I discovered by trial and error that despite what it says in the manual, you can't mix tracks and subfolders in a folder, if you want the directory system to work correctly. After rearranging the folders so that there are all tracks or all subfolders in a folder, it works properly.

Curtis Portable AM/FM Digital iPod Dock (Blue) Review

Curtis Portable AM/FM Digital iPod DockThe item I received was slightly different than the pictured item. Which was surprising since I bought it from Amazon. It wasn't too different though so I decided to keep it. It worked great for about 1 month then the AM radio stopped working and the stereo stopped charging my iPod. About 1 week later the speakers started to go fuzzy. If the item worked it would be great but it broke down before the first set of batteries even ran out.

Griffin Technology Amplifi Home Music Speaker System for iPod (Black) Review

Griffin Technology Amplifi Home Music Speaker System for iPodThis is part of a three way Comparison, Bose SoundDock vs. Griffin Amplifi vs. Altec Lansing IM600. Please see my reviews for those other products for detailed comparison:

Design and Features:

Griffin Amplifi: Cabinet made of wood, looks like small shoebox. Has two 2.75" drivers front mounted and a bottom mounted 5" woofer with a bass port. Griffin in the worst Bose tradition refuses to disclose many tech statistics on their unit, but my power estimate puts this at about 30-40 watts, not really much different from the Bose SoundDock. (To sound twice as loud needs a 10 times (1000%) increase in wattage, so the Bose advantage of maybe 33% more power should not really give much real world benefit.) Frequency response per mfgr is 50-16,000 kHz which seems a bit unbelievable on the low end, but feasible enough on the higher end. Ipod docks on top and sticks awkwardly out of the unit like a control tower, but fit is snugger than on Sound Dock which makes me feel more reassured.

There is a line-in and not much more. Big blue-lit knob controls on-off and volume. Remote is a copy of the Bose's with the same simple functions. Range and aiming tolerance is inferior to both the Bose and the Altec, but certainly adequate. Annoyingly, the Amplifi only charges an Ipod docked in it when the Amplifi is on; if the Ipod is docked and the Griffin is turned off, no charging. Either Griffin's engineers are idiots, or they decided to save a few pennies in the design.

Sound:

Griffin: Bass is about as good as the SoundDock, maybe lower extension, but roughly the same precision and balance. Griffin is to be commended for not going crazy and letting the big 5" woofer run roughshod over the sound of the Amplifi. The big woofer does not make the Amplifi sound better than the Bose at the low end, but on the other hand it doesn't sound worse, and it is also much cheaper. Griffin was not aiming to beat the Bose here, but rather to equal it with a lower price and simpler design. Mid-range is another strong point here, and treble is also a bit lacking, like in the Bose, but not too much so. Classical pieces still sound very good on the Griffin.

Where the Amplifi does lose ground to Bose is in the fancy stuff. Stereo separation is non-existent, and detail is nowhere near as precise as on the Bose. This sounds like a big loud mono speaker. Low volumes especially lose a lot of fine subtlety, and distortion is heard at the very highest volumes (though to be fair, no one would really play this unit that loud, as it is probably 100 dB or more.) The acoustically tuned all wood cabinet adds little to the sound signature of the Amplif vis a vis the plastic cabinet of the Bose. The lack of stereo separation, detail, and full clarity throughout all volume ranges is where the added cost of the Bose is most evident and justifiable. Most users will like the Griffin though; it mimics the sound signature of the Bose convincingly, has a retro wood cabinet design, and has at least one important feature that the Bose lacks, a line-in, all of this at a street value of 1/3rd of what the Bose goes for. This will make the Amplif a great solution for most users, especially those on a budget. However, the added price of the Bose does create a noticeably superior sound in at least some aspects.

Value:

Griffin: List of $150, normally seen online at roughly $115-$125. I picked mine up at Circuit City for $100.

Summary:

Bose: Probably not worth $300, the price I paid of $225 feels like about what the SoundDock is worth. The sound is audibly better quality here, though probably not two to three times better than the Griffin or the Altec, which is what the pricing would indicate. The lack of a decent feature set makes the Bose seem like even less of a value. Again though, if style, quality, simplicity, and excellent sound is your goal, and price does not matter that much, the Bose is a fine choice. Special note to all the Bose haters: take a listen to this before lumping it in with such atrocities as the Acoustimass and StereoEverywhere technology. The SoundDock sounds unusually good, does not mangle realism of the sound unpleasantly, and is really the cutting edge of what can be done with reproducing Ipod sound from a small one-piece unit.

Griffin: Aims for the SoundDock's sound signature, and generally succeeds. Lacks a bit of polish in both physical and sonic characteristics, but overall is an excellent value. If you want Bose, but can't afford it, the Amplifi will not leave you with many regrets. The wooden cabinet and big bass driver are not utilized very distinctively, but there are no glaring missteps here either. However, if you can afford the SoundDock, the Griffin has no real advantages as its clone philosophy and minimal feature set offer no advantage over Bose except cost. The bigger and better sound of the SoundDock justifies the added cost as long as price is not the main consideration.

Altec Lansing: The excellent design, wonderful feature set, and portability of this unit distinguishes and separates it from the other two. Sound is generally well done, crisp and appealing, and the treble emphasis gives the Altec its own sonic niche. The power difference in watts is not really noticeable except if you are trying to fill up a big room with sound, and why would you be doing that with a wee tiny Ipod dock anyway? Most users will be very happy with the IM600's sound and the quality FM tuner is just the icing on the cake. If you are on a budget, I would say get the Altec as it sells for roughly the same price as the Amplifi, and has many more features including portability. The IM600 has somewhat less bass than the Griffin, but better stereo sound and detail clarity.

XAct XS027 Sirius Satellite Radio Portable Boombox with CD Player and AM/FM Tuner Review

XAct XS027 Sirius Satellite Radio Portable Boombox with CD Player and AM/FM TunerI purchased two of these units and found that the volume function on the remote does not work on either unit.I contacted XACT (which was a huge hassle) and talked to supervisor after supervisor and the only explanation they could give me to why the volume could not be adjusted from the remote was that " it was manufactured that way"... are you kidding, i had stereo's 20 years ago that had a remote that could control volume.Other than that the unit is fine, but I just feel a state of the art "deluxe" boom box should be able to adjust the voulume via the remote. Why else would you waste 2 buttons on the tiny remote. It is just a pain to have to physically increase or decrease the volume manually.

Griffin Technology 1202-PRTSPKR Journi Portable Speaker System for iPod Review

Griffin Technology 1202-PRTSPKR Journi Portable Speaker System for iPodI'm so surprised I haven't heard of this iPod dock system before!I was set on buying a family member a Klipsch for Christmas. But when speaking to their significant other to confirm that was a good choice, they stressed it should be something that was portable. So while browsing a local box store, I found this.I happened to have my iPod with me so I stuck it in to listen to the sound. For what it is, it's pretty impressive.

Its sound doesn't compare to something like a Bose or a Klipsch, but the portability is awesome. It runs on batteries as well as AC, and it stores the remote on the underside of the speakers. To prop up the speakers, you simply turn the case out and it creates a pseudo-stand for the speakers. You don't have to prop up the speakers to hear sound either.

It's not a problem considering the quality of sound, and anything comparable would be just as heavy, but it's a beefy piece of equipment in terms of weight. It's not back breaking, but it's deceiving when looking at it.It certainly doesn't give the look or feel of cheaply made Chinese products. It's size, though, is perfect for a backpack.

Since they are into camping and doing things outdoors, this seems like a perfect solution for them.I hope they like this as their gift, and I hope they don't read this review (doubtful).

If you're looking for a portable system, I would recommend this over any other portable iPod docking system on the market.
